Three counties, many communities
From Pharr, the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley serves Cameron, Hidalgo and Willacy counties. Its mission joins food assistance with nutrition education and access to community services. The geography matters: this is a regional effort connecting cities, smaller communities and rural areas through a mix of partner agencies and direct programs.
Moving food toward people
The food bank traces its mobile produce distributions to Raymondville in 2016, when the loss of major employers left residents with fewer resources and reduced access to fresh produce. Its mobile program now describes a broader reach across rural communities and cities, combining produce with shelf-stable food and frozen protein. A separate social-services team helps people apply for benefits, including SNAP, Medicaid and CHIP; the organization assists with applications but does not decide eligibility.
Access beyond a food box
The combination of food distribution and benefits navigation places immediate help alongside access to longer-term household resources. Home visits, libraries and community centers are among the settings used by its social-services team. Led by co-chief executive officers Connie Ramos and Libby Ann Saenz, the food bank offers supporters a regional institution whose work follows families beyond a single distribution day and into the practical business of finding assistance.
