The work behind the mark

HIM

Historical Intelligence Machine

HIM is a proprietary historical intelligence system developed by Clayton Hollingsworth to recover the human experience behind the historical record—through research, storytelling, images, sound, food and other sensory experiences.

A life around the record.

A photograph can give me a face. A letter can give me a voice. A household account might tell me what was on the table. I want to follow those clues toward a fuller understanding of the person who lived with them.

HIM brings that work together. It can become a restored photograph, a film, a narrated story, a study of a room’s sounds or a meal grounded in the food available to a family in its time and place. The work can involve sight, hearing, smell, taste and the atmosphere of ordinary life.

What the designation means.

HIM is the designation I use for work prepared through this system. I keep the sources and the history of the work behind it. Names, relationships and historical claims remain open to correction as the evidence develops.

Some work preserves what survives. Some gives form to a scene, voice or experience I have imagined around the research. A convincing result does not turn an imagined detail into a historical fact. The sources and the story still matter.

Meet ARCHi

Art, Research, Culture, History & Imagination

ARCHi is the research and public-facing platform I’m developing within HIM. It brings art and inquiry into the same conversation: following evidence, exploring culture and history, and giving imagination a thoughtful place in the work.

The profile and gears are its original identity. You may begin noticing the name around the site as the work takes shape.
