Projects / work in motion

An entirely reasonable number of open investigations.

These are active bodies of work with sources, questions, outputs and a next move.

01
Research and manuscript development

The Arms of God: Los Brazos de Dios

A multigenerational family history following one family through roughly two hundred years along the Brazos River. It joins land, migration, farming, slavery, emancipation, family memory and present-day research into a story larger—and more honest—than a pedigree chart.

Current work: reconstructing original Perry, Whitehead, Morton, Fitzgerald, Fenn and Shipman land connections from Mexican grants, annotated survey maps, probate records and nineteenth-century deeds, while preserving unaltered images and distinguishing family ties from verified ownership.

Memoir in development / Podcast available

France, 1998

At fifteen, Clayton left Texas for the Pyrenees and lived at L’Itaca near Nyer—an old stone farmholding tied to a landscape of baronies, resistance, communal experiments and family mythology. The memoir asks what a teenager believes he is escaping, and what inheritance manages to pack its own bag.

Current work: reconstructing place, people and chronology while preserving the difference between memory, family account and documentary record.

Archive and research intelligence

ARCHi

A working method for turning inherited photographs, scattered records, DNA evidence and oral history into organized, usable intelligence. Every image receives a source record, treatment note, people and place tags, confidence language and links to the stories it supports.

Current work: building the Recovered directory and accumulating biographical records for the people who appear in it.

Born as a private father–daughter publication

HeyPerry!

The customized morning email I built for Perry Kate: weather, reminders, encouragement, school-day details and a daily note from Dad. It began as one practical way to love my daughter across the distance and became the seed of something other families may find useful too.

Current work: shaping the private experiment into a thoughtful public idea for students and families.

UNSUPERVISED*

The enterprise holding all of this together: a weekly dispatch on family, fun, philanthropy, Texas places, useful institutions and the art of being unsupervised.

Current work: expanding the archive, Field Notes, nonprofit directory and social-ready story system.
