The name we used at home
Alvin Donald Hensley was my grandmother Wanda Dale Perry’s husband. I knew him as Papa Don. His place in this archive comes from his place in our family.
Don was born on October 28, 1931, in Sweetwater, Texas.
My father Perry Wayne’s 2012 obituary names Wanda Hensley and her husband Don among his surviving family. It is a small public record of a relationship that was already familiar at home.

Wanda and Don
Wanda’s family account records their marriage on December 1, 1985, in Red Oak, Texas. She remembered their Jamaican honeymoon with particular pleasure: the long bus ride to the hotel, music and dancing, and carved wooden gifts they brought home.
She also remembered a later journey to Hawaii while they were working in Minnesota in the late 1990s. Those trips belong to their shared life alongside the work and ordinary family days.
