A life, recovered / Died 1827
Daniel Perry II
An estate ledger and the lives it contained
01
The household in the ledger
Daniel Perry II died in South Carolina in 1827. The estate transcription preserved in the family archive lists land, animals, debts and household property. It also lists human beings, showing how the law folded enslaved people into the same accounting of ownership and transfer.

Names that must remain visible
The transcription preserves Thomas Taylor, Jesse, America, Rachel, Mingo, Thomas Prigman and Arthur. It also records two children of Rachel without preserving their names. That is at least nine people, seven named. Each belongs in the archive as a person; their presence is not only a detail in Daniel’s biography.
The surviving account does not establish the other individuals’ relationships to one another or their later lives. The family’s wider account of a larger enslaved community remains separate from what this transcription establishes. Their names and Rachel’s recorded parenthood are retained without inventing a family tree the evidence does not yet support.
