Tennie Lee Smith Anderson
Born into the Smith and Walker family, Tennie made a life with Guy Anderson across Texas—and left more than dates behind.
AI-animated from Tennie’s portrait, with imagined first-person narration. Her documented story and photographs follow below.

My great-grandmother, Tennie
Tennie Lee Smith Anderson was my great-grandmother and the mother of Billy Guy Anderson. Her name belongs beside Guy’s in this family history, with a life and a page of her own. The portraits give me her face. The records give me places, people, and a few glimpses of the days between the dates.
She was born on May 16, 1910, in Navarro County, Texas, to Nolan David Smith and Jessie Quenile Walker. Her death certificate names her mother as Jessie Walker and records the same birth date. The family chronology locates her birth more specifically at Pursley.

A Smith and Walker childhood
Before she was an Anderson, Tennie belonged to a Smith household whose story crossed the Texas–Oklahoma line. Her parents had married in Navarro County on September 1, 1902. The family record names older siblings Willie Finest and Lula Idalia Faye, remembered as Duck, and younger siblings Ora Melissa, Jake Walker Richard, Raymond Parker, and Thaura Dee.
Tennie’s own family-tree chronology places her in Wilson, Atoka County, Oklahoma, in 1920, and in Looney, Harmon County, in 1930. These are useful points on the map of her early life. They do not tell us which school she attended or what prompted each move.
Two different young portraits survive in the material reviewed here: the familiar bobbed-hair image and a studio portrait with her hair parted to the side. The second photograph is preserved below at its available album resolution, including the worn edges of the print.

A marriage in Ellis County
Tennie married Guy William Anderson in Ellis County on January 16, 1931. She was twenty. Lula Colleen was born in Palmer on August 12 of that year; Patsy Ruth Anderson followed on June 18, 1933, in Ferris. Billy Guy was born in Palmer on February 17, 1941.
Colleen is remembered in this archive as Aunt Colleen. Billy Guy became Papa Bill, the father who raised my mother, Gia. That is how Tennie’s place in the Anderson family reaches my own family story.

From Oklahoma to the Panhandle—and back to Ellis County
After those early Oklahoma entries, the chronology places Tennie and Guy’s household in Wellington, in the Texas Panhandle, in 1935 and at the 1940 census. In between, Tennie lost her mother. Jessie died in Dallas on May 26, 1937, ten days after Tennie’s twenty-seventh birthday.
By 1942, Guy’s Selective Service registration gives Palmer as his residence. It names Mrs. Tennie Anderson as the person who would always know his address. A draft card is a government form, but that small entry also places Tennie at the center of the household’s contact information.
The 1950 family-tree entry places them in Ferris. Guy worked as an automobile mechanic. Tennie’s later death certificate records her usual occupation as housewife. The records describe their work in a few words; they do not preserve the daily running of their home.

A Colorado vacation
One surviving newspaper notice takes the story beyond the census. An entry dated July 13, 1961, in the family chronology preserves a clipping reporting that Mr. and Mrs. Guy Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Mike McKeever, and the McKeevers’ son Urbin were vacationing in Colorado Springs and the surrounding area.
The notice identifies the Andersons as residents of Ferris. It gives us something the vital records cannot: Tennie and Guy away on a summer trip with people they knew. The clipping is reproduced here as it survives in the family album.

Visits, Sundays, and the people around her
The newspaper fragments from May 1962 return Tennie to the company of family and friends. A clipping filed under May 4 names Mr. and Mrs. Guy Anderson of Ferris among visitors to Mr. and Mrs. Voil Bullock, alongside Hattie Anderson, Marie Anderson, and Jerry Teems and his family. Another, filed under May 17, places the Andersons among the Bullocks’ Sunday guests.
The May 31 entry names Mrs. Guy Anderson among weekend visitors at the same home, along with Mrs. Bill Birdwell and Kim of Ferris and guests from Lancaster, Dallas, and Waxahachie. In the newspaper, Tennie appears under her husband’s name. Here, she has her own.
That spring also brought the death of her father. Nolan died in Dallas on March 10, 1962, when Tennie was fifty-one. The visits and the loss belong to the same stretch of her life, though the surviving records do not tell us how she spoke about either.

Thirty-seven years together
Tennie died at W. C. Tenery Community Hospital in Waxahachie on January 21, 1968. She was fifty-seven. Her usual residence was Ferris, and the certificate records a four-day hospital stay. Her death came five days after her and Guy’s thirty-seventh wedding anniversary.
The certificate names Edgewood Cemetery in Lancaster. The photograph of her grave marker carries her married name, the years 1910–1968, and one word above them: MOTHER.
Her children, her parents, her marriage, the moves, the visits, and the trip to Colorado all belong in her story. Each surviving detail lets the page hold a little more of the person behind that inscription.

The photographs and the imagined scene
The opening film is an AI-animated portrait with imagined narration, not a historical recording of Tennie. Her restored and colorized portrait appears near the beginning of this page. The black-and-white restoration and the separate young studio photograph offer other views. Color and restored detail are interpretive; the surviving photographs remain the references.
A small group photograph also survives in her album under the filename WmBessieDeesTennieLee. That label is retained with the image. It does not establish which person stands in each position, so this page does not assign the individual faces.
The separate 1930s-inspired lounge scene is a historical reimagining based on Tennie’s likeness. Its cocktail dress, setting, and cigarette are imagined. It is presented as a creative portrait, not as a photographed event in her life.
