Literacy Texas
The people behind the people who teach
Literacy Texas strengthens the local organizations where adults return to learning.
The Short Version
A statewide coalition equipping local adult and family literacy programs through training, resources and advocacy.
A statewide support role
Literacy Texas works through a network of community-based adult and family literacy organizations. Its contribution is the training, resources, connections and advocacy that help those local programs function. That makes it relevant to donors who want to strengthen the people delivering services across Texas, including communities far from a major education center.
More than reading a page
The coalition supports programs addressing reading, English-language learning, high school equivalency and family literacy. Its professional-development offerings include regional symposia, an annual conference and online learning. In an October 2026 essay, Executive Director Katie Welch connects adult education with the goals learners bring into the classroom, including employment and fuller participation in family and community life. The emphasis is on supporting local educators as they respond to those varied goals.
Investing in local educators
Supporting the coalition is a way to invest in the organizations behind individual classrooms. Its resource library, training and professional connections give staff and volunteers places to turn as they build their programs. For a small literacy organization, access to shared knowledge can be an important resource. Under Executive Director Katie Welch, Literacy Texas brings those local efforts into a statewide community organized around adults' and families' ability to learn and participate.
