Texas Land Conservancy

Keeping the promise after the land is protected

Texas Land Conservancy pairs the initial act of conservation with the work of caring for land over time.

The Short Version

A statewide land trust protecting natural landscapes through landowner partnerships, conservation agreements and long-term stewardship.

A statewide inheritance

Texas Land Conservancy began in 1982 with conservationist Ned Fritz and a group of volunteers. Its purpose remains grounded in the protection of natural areas, wildlife habitat, native plants and scenic landscapes. For rural Texas, the work connects the future of particular properties with larger questions about fragmentation, development pressure and the character of the state.

Protection is a continuing responsibility

The organization works with private landowners to conserve property and says it visits protected lands annually to meet with owners and monitor conditions. Its staff structure includes conservation, stewardship and regional roles. That is an important part of the story: a conservation agreement starts an enduring responsibility, and maintaining the relationship with the land requires people, expertise and reliable resources.

From ownership to participation

Landowners are not the only people with a role. Guided hikes, volunteer workdays and other events invite the wider public into conservation. Annual membership and recurring giving support the work throughout the year. Executive Director Mark Steinbach leads the organization, while Strategic Operations Director Maren McLaughlin-Klotz oversees fundraising, communications and outreach. Together, landowner relationships, professional stewardship and public participation make protection an ongoing community responsibility rather than a moment on a map.
