The Riddle and Perry families meet

Julia Mae Riddle married James Albert “Jim” Perry at Aspermont on June 15, 1913. Their children included Raymond and Otis.

Her family belongs to the Stonewall County chapter of Clayton’s history, the generation behind the Perry Ranch memories of Raymond’s children.

The portrait with Jim

Julia stands beside Jim in a surviving portrait. The colorized version is a restoration of that portrait.

The picture gives Julia an individual presence beside the names of her husband and sons. It is a view of a person, not simply a marker between generations.

A long life beyond one image

Julia lived from 1896 to 1979, outliving Jim by more than three decades. The portrait captures only one moment within that much longer life.

Her place in the archive continues through the Riddle connection, her own image and the family household remembered by later generations.
