The Perry Ranch

Raymond John D. Perry farmed near Aspermont with Euna Mae Carden Perry. Their household belonged to a closely connected Stonewall County family that included Raymond’s parents, Jim and Julia Mae, and his brother Otis.

Raymond, Jim, Otis and the returning farmworker Ramon appear in the peanut-harvest photograph. The sacks, machinery and assembled workers give a physical setting to the labor their descendants remember.

03

Work and room to play

In Wanda’s recollections, Raymond taught the children to drive the grain truck in granny gear when they were still young. He also built a floating deck on the stock tank so they could swim. Work and recreation both called for practical invention.

Those memories make his fatherhood tangible. There was a truck to learn, water to swim in and a father who found ways to make both available.

04

A house closer to school

The ranch stood about seventeen miles from Aspermont. As the children grew older, the distance limited their participation in school activities. Raymond built a house in town.

Wanda remembered that decision as part of what her father gave the family. It changed the daily possibilities around his children: school life became something they could join more fully.
